3 steps for cutting the cable cord in 2017

Anyone who has ever dealt with a cable company’s customer service department knows that the industry is stuck in 1995 — or perhaps in the ninth circle of… well, you know where.

But it’s 2017. We no longer need to be beholden to cable companies. As alternative options to traditional cable packages become more ubiquitous, streaming services have brought us into the 21st century. Today, the number of cord-cutters ditching Big Cable for more customizable, flexible options is growing by the day.

Once you’ve severed ties with your cable company, the hardest part is over. Now, it’s time to navigate the waters of the various streaming services to find the optimal programming options for your viewing preferences.

Below, we dig into how to join the cord-cutter movement in 2017.

1. Investigate streaming services

The best news is that streaming services almost never include hidden fees or the obligation of an annual contract, making them an appealing option for those seeking a more streamlined television experience.

Today, there are more customizable streaming service options than ever before. À la carte television isn’t an obscure concept of the future — it’s already here. Playstation Vue, for example, is a TV service that allows you to stream and DVR thousands of hours of your favorite shows — including live programs. You can get your Game of Thrones fix by adding Premium channels such as HBO — these channels can be purchased individually, or with a multi-channel plan.

2. Set up your home streaming system

In terms of the hardware you’ll need, if you’ve purchased a television recently (in the past couple of years), it’s likely already equipped for integration with services like PlayStation Vue. (You can check out Mashable’s coverage of the most advanced Smart TV options here.)

If you already have a PS4™ or PS3™ console, you’re already able to use this as a streaming device on older televisions. Otherwise, you can investigate third-party options like Roku.

3. Choose the package that’s right for you

Lack of access to real-time television has long been a pain point for cord cutters — which is why PlayStation Vue represents the next level of steaming services’ evolution process.

With PlayStation Vue, you can get dozens of your favorite channels streamed live — so you don’t need to worry about pesky spoilers on social media. PlayStation Vue is also a great option for sports lovers interested in joining the cord-cutter movement; NFL Network comes included in the Core package, and NFL RedZone is available as an add-on. The live-streaming element of the service makes it a snap to catch the big game (or record and watch it later)*.

Subscribers can also bookmark their favorite channels, and cloud DVR gives you access to recorded shows, games and movies across multiple devices — and even via separate profiles for up to five different people.

As streaming technologies continue to evolve, it’s truly a brave new world for TV — one in which the phrase “let me put you on hold,” is a thing of the past.

*Live streaming for select networks may vary by location. Some sport events subject to area blackouts. Individual game availability depends on your location and channel lineup and is subject to blackout and mobile restrictions. This includes select games on NFL Network. Please be aware that select channels showing NFL games are not available in some areas. In order to watch a specific game, you will need to have a live feed for that channel in your city. On Demand streams will not show the games. To check what channels are live or On Demand in your city, please visit www.psvue.com and enter your zip code.
